You’ve probably heard that you can lose a lot of weight, in a ridiculously short period of time, by subsisting on one boiled egg per day. Or, maybe it’s a pomegranate. Or, a bowl of cabbage.
Whatever random food is chosen for the “once daily” target intake, the concept of these fad diets is the same: It’s a temporary sacrifice that brings about the results you want, in a very short period of time.
Unfortunately, these diets usually don’t work very well, and they can do more harm than good.
We know you’ve heard it before, but it’s worth saying again: A lot of the “weight” that you lose on fad diets is what we call “water weight”. Your body’s cells become dehydrated and shrink, and this can lead to the appearance of weight loss when you step on the scale. But when you begin eating normally again, the “weight” appears to quickly return. This is due to the fact that you didn’t actually burn through as much fat stores as you thought.
Since you didn’t burn very much actual fat tissue, another problem can present itself in terms of body composition. You might fit into a smaller pair of jeans, and the number on the scale looks satisfying, but you’re still not overly thrilled with your appearance. This is due to the fact that you didn’t replace fat with lean muscle, so you still might not have the toned appearance you envisioned.
But the worst problem with fad diets is that they wreck your metabolism. Your body goes into “starvation mode” and conserves energy by slowing your metabolism. Yes, you lose some weight (especially water weight), but the weight comes back quickly when you stop following the unrealistic eating plan. Sometimes people even gain back more weight than they lost!
Finally, fad diets tend to be unhealthy. There is simply no way that you can eat the same food item, day after day, and not trigger a vitamin or mineral deficiency. We all need a well-rounded, healthy diet to thrive – and yes, to lose weight.
