3 Reasons to Keep a Food and Exercise Journal

You’ve heard that keeping a journal can help you commit to a healthy eating plan or workout regimen. But isn’t this just one more cumbersome chore? Will it really help with your weight loss plan, or become another dreaded task?

Everyone is different, of course, but in general there are three very good reasons to journal your self-transformation.

Commit to better habits. We often think of journaling as recording everything we ate or did on a particular day, but it’s actually more helpful to write down your goals at the beginning of the day. Mentally, this helps us to commit to better habits, and it’s also quite satisfying to check off those boxes as you complete your goals! Consider adding the following items to your daily lists:

  • Aerobic exercise (at least 30 minutes)
  • Strength training or toning
  • Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables
  • Consume your recommended amount of fiber
  • Include a certain number of grams of protein in your eating plan
  • Eat a serving of healthy fats
  • Take supplements
  • Get 8 hours of sleep
  • … And any other daily habits that you feel are important

Change other aspects of your life. When it comes to health, everything is related. You could actually call your food and exercise journal a health journal, and use it to build better health overall. Aside from your weight loss plan, do you have any other goals? Self care, relaxation, learning a new subject… These are all healthy habits that contribute to better overall well being.

Change your mindset. If life has been getting you down, journaling can help you develop a more positive mindset. At the end each day, when you’re checking items off your to-do list, take a moment to record something that made you smile. Doing this every day can help you develop an appreciation for the small moments that bring you true joy.
