Walking is regarded as one of the simplest, yet also most effective ways to get in shape and drop unwanted pounds. However, it can also get a bit boring after some time, and it can feel less challenging as you get fit. If you find your interest in exercise or your weight loss plan waning, try these five tips to take your walk to the next level.
Change your route. The same old sights can get boring after a while. Choose an alternate walking route, or several, and mix it up to keep your walk interesting. Add some hills if you can, because those will increase your calorie burn and help you feel more challenged.
Turn your walk into a meditation. We all spend so much time socializing, on our phones, and listening to noise and commotion, that we rarely get a moment alone with our own thoughts. Turn off the music and allow your mind to wander as you walk, and you can enjoy the de-stressing benefits of meditation while you exercise. But please, stay safe if you choose to walk alone!
Push yourself a little longer. It’s a simple solution, but effective if your main complaint is that you no longer feel challenged by walking. Add five or ten minutes to your route, and you will bump up your calorie burn too.
Add intervals. Add bursts of speed for about two minutes, drop back to your regular pace for a few minutes, and then repeat. You can even work up to running by taking this interval approach, which is a great way to train for a charity run. And as you might expect, your body will expend more calories this way too.
These ideas should get your wheels turning. But if you’re truly getting bored with walking, it’s definitely okay to switch to a different form of exercise for a while. The most important thing is to keep moving, and choose activities that you enjoy so that you don’t get burned out on exercise entirely.
