When you’re following a weight loss plan, preparing for meals becomes one of the biggest keys to your success. We all perform better at tasks when we’re well prepared, so why should eating healthfully be any different?
But of course, some people simply dread grocery shopping and preparing meals. If that sounds familiar, use these six tips at the grocery store to get yourself on the right track.
Plan your trip. Start by listing meals and snacks for the upcoming week (or time period for which you’re shopping). Then check your pantry for ingredients, make a list of additional things you need, and group them by location in the store. Now you can make once trip through the store without backtracking or crisscrossing aisles unnecessarily.
Focus on seasonal produce. A seasonal diet is already healthier, for numerous reasons. Plus, it’s almost always cheaper to buy seasonal fruits and veggies. Planning your meals around produce will help you to center your diet on what counts the most. Remember, pre-chopped is okay for those who lack time for complicated dishes.
Now add some proteins. In additional to lean meats and fish, pick up a few cans of black beans, yogurt cups, string cheeses, and other sources of fast, easy proteins for snacking.
Boost the flavor. Cooking is more fun, and the results more satisfying, when you stock your pantry with oils, herbs, and spices. Plus, you’re more likely to stick with a weight loss plan when you’re enjoying flavorful dishes.
Avoid certain aisles entirely. The great thing about most grocery store layouts is that they make it fairly easy to avoid most junk foods. Skip the bakery, snack aisle, and candy department. Most of your shopping will be completed around the outside of the store.
Prepare yourself. Don’t go to the store when you’re hungry, because you’ll be more tempted to grab items that aren’t on your list. And remember that thirst is often mistaken for hunger; stay hydrated so that you don’t get your signals crossed.
