Five Healthy Ingredients to Grab on Your Next Grocery Run

Whether you’re making changes due to a weight loss plan, or just want to get healthier and prevent health problems, you might be experiencing a common feeling. Many people think that healthy foods just don’t taste as good as the unhealthy options, and this viewpoint can lead to disappointment (or quitting your new eating plan).

In truth, healthy foods can be just as delicious as their fast-food and packaged counterparts, but most of us aren’t familiar with healthy food preparation techniques that lead to tasty outcomes. This is one result of our on-the-go culture; we simply don’t prepare our own foods much anymore, and we’re less familiar with ways to create tasty, low-calorie dishes.

So, we’re going to make it easier for you. Whether you’re just getting started on your weight loss journey, or you’ve run out of recipe ideas and you’re feeling bored, pick up these five ingredients at the grocery store next time you go. Work them into your eating plan, and discover new, exciting flavors that are actually satisfying.

Citrus. Citrus fruits can be used in dressings for more interesting salads, or marinades to add a kick to fish and chicken.

Spices. If you’re not already familiar with the spice aisle of your grocery store, it’s time to get acquainted. Start your spice collection, and begin branching out with new recipes (especially interesting ethnic ones). Keeping your taste buds entertained is a key to preventing boredom with your diet.

Dried chili peppers. While you’re at it, grab a bag of dried chili peppers. One large bag will last for years, and you can chop them into salad dressings, stir fry dishes, soups and more. Just be careful not to add too much heat!

Fresh herbs. When you can, substitute fresh herbs for their dried counterparts. The flavor is so much more inviting.

Salt. Okay, so you probably have this already. But you can experiment with fun flavored varieties as well. Unless you’re following a doctor’s advice to lower your salt intake, there’s no reason you can’t enjoy the flavor in your dishes.

If you’re still feeling bored or frustrated with your weight loss plan, give us a call. We can help you analyze which parts of your program aren’t working for you, and get you started on a path to success.
