You want to like yoga… You tried to like yoga… You especially wanted that “yoga body”… And yet, you tried yoga. And you hated it. What happened?
Some people just don’t like the things that most other people enjoy. And if that’s you, there’s nothing wrong with that. Just because yoga is extremely popular right now, doesn’t mean you are under any obligation to do it or enjoy it. But if you really want the benefits of a regular yoga practice, such as greater flexibility, lowered anxiety, and even boosting your weight loss plan, then maybe you should try “troubleshooting” your experience.
Pinpoint your discomfort. Was it the class setting? The teacher? The other students? Seek to understand what turned you off to the experience.
Try it a different way. There are many types of yoga classes, and teachers have different styles. If the setting or other students felt wrong for you, you can even practice yoga at home via a streaming video format.
Get into the right frame of mind. Try not to practice yoga at a stressful time of day, at least not without an appropriate transition period. Arrive to class early, close your eyes, and meditate for a few moments to clear your head.
Don’t compare yourself to others. Everyone has to start somewhere, and those talented ladies performing effortless handstands were once a clumsy mess (yes, really). Set aside expectations of a flawless “performance”, and dedicate yourself to doing your own personal best. The great thing about yoga is its non-competitive nature! It truly is about developing at your own pace.
Give it time. Try each class at least two or three times. You might be amazed at how much more comfortable you feel by the second or third class.
Change your mindset. Something that is difficult is not a limitation; it’s a challenge to grow. Yoga has a way of showing you things you didn’t even know about your own body. Put this information to use, for better fitness and health!
